Are You Able to Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation Which Forged the Modern World

There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to a automated timber mill invented by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”

Owing to their speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber to planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic dominance in the continent and the world.
