At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
