The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
