Just as Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their title hopes severely dented.

Manchester United's capability to manage league and European football with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they looked tired from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in comparison, have no such workload issues. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the quality from City whose dynamic attack manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half performance that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and left United disorganized. Before this match, United had let in just six in this league campaign but they fell apart in the presence of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Opening Threats

Hemp was at the heart of everything from the start, exploiting the gap left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right flank. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had multiple attacks forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, controlled the ball, taunting their opponents and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the campaign.

Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the contest. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the post, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any team who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
