Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
